HOLLY SPRINGS — Madyson Brown scored two goals and Sarah Peters made 16 saves in goal as the Wilson Youth Soccer Association ‘07 Explosion picked up its first win of the North Carolina Youth Soccer Association’s Spring Classic League on Sunday.

The Explosion rose to 1-2-2 in the 12U Girls Second Division East 1 with the 3-2 victory over Wake FC Fire (1-2-3) at Womble Park.

Avery Brown scored on a touch off a Fire defender on a pass from Brown following a corner kick. Brown then scored her first goal with Madison Ferrell providing the assist before Gretchen Weeks fed Brown for the decisive goal after Wake FC had tied the score 2-all.

The win was revenge for the ‘07 Explosion after losing to the Fire in the Wake FC Winter Classic finals in February.

The Explosion will play games Saturday against Neuse River Futbol Alliance and Sunday versus Seashore Soccer League Blue at Gillette Soccer Complex.

‘06 Explosion Ladies suffer 1st NLPC loss

MEBANE — The ‘06 Explosion Ladies suffered their first loss in U.S. Youth Soccer National League Piedmont Conference 13U Girls play with a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Charlotte Soccer Association South Elite on Saturday at Mebane Community Park.

Susan Guzman had the Explosion’s only goal, with Mariah Polk on the assist, as the first half ended in 1-1 tie. However, CSA South Elite powered in three second-half goals to improve to 8-0-0 on the season and tighten its grip on first place in the division. The Explosion Ladies remain in second place with a 6-1-2 mark.

“Playing against the top U13 girls team in the state is a great challenge,” said Explosion coach Thomas Goines. “A tough five-minute spell in the second half put the girls in a two-goal hole that was too much to overcome.

“The girls learned a lot from this game and we look forward to our next opportunity and the rest of the league.”

That will come Saturday and Sunday, April 13-14, in Roswell, Georgia, against Piedmont Conference foes Inter Atlanta FC Blue and Roswell Santos Blue.

‘05 Explosion smacks Coastal United

NEW BERN — Victor Mendez scored in the opening minutes of each half to spark the ‘05 Explosion 14U Boys team to a 5-2 win over host Coastal United Navy on Saturday at Creekside Park.

Mendez headed in a rebound in the fifth minute and, with Wilson up 2-0, slipped in a cross in the 37th. Chase Gurgone headed in a pass from Gian Paul Morales in the 29th minute to give the Explosion a 2-0 halftime lead.

Wilson padded its lead late in the match on a free-kick goal by Adam McCarthy and a deep shot from outside the 20-yard line by Horacio Urrutia in the 69th minute.

The ‘05 Explosion, now 4-3-1, will visit Seaside Soccer Classic Clinton United on Saturday, April 13, at Royal Lane Park in Clinton.

‘02 Explosion hangs on for draw

Despite playing a man down for almost 20 minutes due to injuries, the ‘02 Explosion held on for a 2-2 draw with visiting Wake FC Arsenal on Saturday at Gillette Soccer Complex.

The Explosion, now 1-3-2 in the 17U Boys Second Division East 1, tied the score at 1-1 in the 25th minute when Eliott Resendiz punched in a cross from Rogelio Ortiz-Flores for his team-best fifth goal this spring.

Graham Walston blasted in a shot from some 20 yards to put the Explosion up 2-1 before the Arsenal got the equalizer with about seven minutes remaining in the match to escape with a 4-1-1 mark.

The Explosion hits the road Saturday to play Lumber River Soccer Association Bladen FC at East Bladen High in Elizabethtown.
